Everything to know from the Windows 10 Devices Event

Matt Blowes October 07, 2015 Hardware

Microsoft’s Windows 10 Devices Event in New York has sent a clear signal that the company is entrenching itself in the hardware market with an expanded range of power-devices perfect for businesses.
The company is releasing a premium laptop for the first time and has also revealed a compelling phone dock for its Lumia range.

Surface Book

The Surface Book is a bold, innovative plunge into the laptop market from Microsoft. As the name suggests, they've taken the styling and features (including a new Surface Pen) from the Surface tablet range and applied those lessons into a powerful detachable laptop. Here are the tech specs:

  • Surface Book 2015-313.5-inch PixelSense™ display at 3000 x 2000 (261 PPI) resolution, 3:2  aspect ratio
  • Up to 12hr battery (video playback), starting from 1,516g weight (including keyboard)
  • Intel Skylake (6th gen Core) i5 or i7 processor
  • 128GB, 256GB or 512GB storage
  • 8 or 16GB RAM
  • Integrated Intel or discrete NVIDIA graphics processor
  • 2x USB 3.0, SD card reader, Surface Connect™, AUX, Mini DisplayPort
  • 5MP front-facing camera, 8MP rear-facing camera with 1080p HD recording

The downside is cost. Microsoft's new laptop starts at $2,299 in Australia, which after USD>AUD conversion and 10% GST is a fair price compared to the US (US$1,499). Pre-orders start October 7 and general availability will be from November 12.

Continuum Display Dock

New Windows Phones now have the power of a Windows PC experience. The Microsoft Display Dock offers to turn a Windows Phone into a Windows PC. By connecting it to a display, apps can scale to a larger screen. By further connecting a keyboard and mouse it will allow your Windows Phone to operate like a Windows PC, including with Office apps. Continuum will only work with new phones announced after today, starting with the new Lumia 950 & 950 XL (discussed below).

Continuum supports external display resolutions up-to 1920x1080. The Display Dock includes connectors for: USB-C (charging), DisplayPort, HDMI, DisplayPort over USB-C, 2xUSB 2.0, 1xUSB 2.0 high current charging. Pricing and availability have not been released.

The Surface tablet range has also gotten a welcome facelift. The new Pro 4 tablet is physically the same size, with a slightly larger 12.3-inch screen. Most of its specifications see a reasonable improvement over the Pro 3.  The Surface Pro 4 may be a cheaper, lighter option for those wanting functionality like the Surface Book yet it even has a comparatively larger storage option of 1TB. You can view the full tech specs here. Prices start at $1,349, pre-orders available October 7 with general availability November 12.

Lumia-950Lumia Phones

Windows 10 Mobile now has two flagship phones. The Lumia 950 and 950 XL are packing remarkable hardware for a phone and can even be used as a basic desktop PC with the Display Dock. The high resolution screen and sharp camera are powered by powerful CPU. There aren't any gimmicky features, these devices focus on performance and capability. Here are the specs:
