As you may well know, Microsoft supports its product suite for a fixed period of time before ceasing the delivery of maintenance and updates. The purchase of Office 2010 promised 10 years of support on a Fixed Lifecyle Policy. Clearly the new decade indicates this support is coming to an end and planning for an upgrade must begin. The biggest fallout from the cessation of support is that Microsoft will no longer provide security updates and they strongly recommend that you upgrade to the latest cloud or on-premise version to remain secure.

I’m a sucker for “Best of” lists, and a New Year sees my social feeds full of “Best X of 2019”. Best Movies, Best TV Shows, Best Gadgets, Best Spatula… no, I’m not joking, and yes, I did read it. Anyway, during one of our meetings, James (the boss) started showing off a new Google Maps feature he had found very useful while travelling. This naturally started a flurry of conversation about our favourite apps. So, with that I decided it was time to compile a list of my own. To be fair, this will not be a Best of 2019 list as the bulk of these apps have been around for some time, but it is certainly a list of some of our favourite apps from the Sentrian Team!

You may have heard the saying that the only constant in life is change, and nowhere is this more apparent than when it comes to the ongoing arms race between the ‘hackers’ and the defenders of your precious data. Each year it seems the threats to data (and reputations) mutate, becoming more complex and potentially more damaging. What worked last year as a defense is suddenly rendered much weakened in the face of the new threat.

If you’re all in with Microsoft Teams, or looking for reasons to be, look no further. It’s no secret that we at Sentrian are big fans of Teams.
If you’re all in with Microsoft Teams, or looking for reasons to be, look no further. It’s no secret that we at Sentrian are big fans of Teams. It’s so much more than a simple Chat program; Teams is a full, powerful, feature-rich collaboration tool. And the best news? Most people are already paying for it with their Office 365 subscription. If you want to know more about what Microsoft Teams can do for you, visit their website to learn more.

As mentioned in previous posts, we were lucky enough to attend the Microsoft Ignite conference in the USA in November 2019. Among many of the exciting announcements (see our blog on the Top 5 releases from Microsoft Ignite 2019) it was advised that the popular Microsoft Office 365 application, Flow, was being renamed to Power Automate. This name change brings the product in line with the rest of the Power Platform, and products like Power Apps and Power BI.

With great excitement, Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft) opened the flagship Ignite conference with his Vision Keynote, once again inspiring the audience with his formula for 'Tech Intensity' - tech adoption multiplied by tech capability and trust. This promises to make every business more productive, collaborative, safe, and efficient through the adoption of the growing suite of Microsoft technologies. Rather than watch Satya's 75 minute keynote address (and the following 4 on the separate technical areas of the Microsoft realm), we've summarised the parts we think may be useful to the average user of the Microsoft suite.

5 Christmas Tech Toys to Absolutely Avoid

1. VIZR HUD

Have you ever watched Top Gun and thought to yourself that it would be super cool to be a fighter pilot? Me too, until I discovered that you had to join the military and do all that pesky ‘training’ and marching around and the like. Fear not though, for the princely sum of around $20.00 you can at least get some of the cool tech that they use in actual fighter jets by buying your very own Heads Up Display (or HUD for all the wanna be fighter pilots). Right now on Ebay you can purchase the VIZR car HUD which will (theoretically) allow you to keep your eyes on the road while still being able to show you the contents of the phone on a semi transparent screen mounted on your dash. Why would you want one of these rather than just get a windscreen mount for your phone you ask? That is a very good question and in all honesty, apart from the ‘this is kinda cool’ aspect of it I’m not entirely sure why you would either. Considering that the screen is projected to just a little bit higher than the dashboard instead of directly in your field of vision (as in a fighter jet), I’m not sure that there is huge utility in one of these things. Perhaps buy one for Secret Santa for a nerdy colleague?
