Microsoft have officially announced Office 2019 will only be available on Windows 10.
Users with older versions of Windows, including Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, will be forced to upgrade their operating system if they want to use the next version of Office.
Microsoft Office 2019 will be released in the second half of 2018, with a public preview expected to start some time between April and June. It will be a major feature update to the standard client Office apps including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
No information has been released about those major changes or new features, however information will likely become available over the next few months.
An opportunity for Office 365
Microsoft Office 365 users will have access to Office 2019 on its release. For those considering upgrading their in the next few months, this obviously this makes the subscription more appealing than a one-off Office 2016 licence which will be superseded within months.
Office 2019 will have five years of mainstream support (basic feature & security updates) and a further two years of extended support (security updates only) ending on 14/10/2025. This end of support date suggests a September/October launch date later this year for Office 2019.
Microsoft did not discuss when the next edition of Office for Mac will be released.
