Microsoft Office 2019 is ready for the public. Select customers will be able to download the software suite from today however many will have to wait several weeks.
Office 2019 is a major update to the on-premises, perpetual licence edition (pay once) of the software productivity suite. It includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Windows users will also receive Project, Visio, Access, and Publisher. Microsoft said it is, "a one-time release and won’t receive future feature updates."
Microsoft is using the launch to heavily push businesses and personal users toward Office 365. The subscription-based service receives constant feature updates and improvements.
Despite being a milestone year-named release, Office 2019 is not a significant release for many users. It is largely a round-up of features that have been added to Office 365 over the last three years.
Office 365 customers already have most of the features of 2019. In fact, Office 365 customers even have exclusive access to a new Outlook interface that Office 2019 will not be receiving.
Microsoft was light on specifics, but here is a round-up of the key new features:
- Outlook – Office 365 Groups, @mentions, Focused Inbox, updated contact cards, and new travel & delivery cards.
- Word – Focus Mode (on Mac), Black theme (on Windows), Office sounds, Learning tools captions and audio descriptions, Text to speech, Improved inking functionality, Accessibility improvements.
- Excel – Funnel charts and 2D maps, New Excel functions and connectors, Publish Excel to Power BI, PowerPivot enhancements, PowerQuery enhancements.
- PowerPoint – Zoom capabilities for ordering of slides within presentations, Morph transition feature, Insert and manage Icons, SVG, and 3D models, Improved roaming pencil case.
Despite being launched today, Office 2019 will be made available in a staggered release. "Trusted" volume licence customers will be able to download the new software suite sometime from September 25.
Other customers, including business and personal Office 365 customers, will be able to download the update, "in the next few weeks".
Office 2019 will only be available on Windows 10 and macOS 10.3 High Sierra (or newer). Older operating systems are not compatible.
